A Recipe for Mulled Wine

Tis the season to be jolly. Log fires, the flickering seductiveness of candle light, old black and white Christmas films on TV, and the warm festive taste and scent of mulled wine.

This is our recipe.

1 bottle of inexpensive full bodied red wine
1 cup of water
1 whole orange with a quantity of cloves pressed into the skin. Clove quantity according to taste of course.
3 cinnamon sticks
A pinch of cinnamon
A pinch of nutmeg
2 heaped teaspoons of caster sugar

Pour the wine and the water into a saucepan, add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Put the orange, cinnamon sticks and spices into the liquid. Leave to simmer for 20 minutes. Do not allow to boil.
Serve in glass goblets.
Stand a teaspoon in the glass while pouring in the warm wine to stop the glass from shattering.
Enjoy.

Of course you could cheat and buy a bottle Gluhwein or mulled wine from the supermarket, but where is the fun in that.
